The event will take place on Thursday, 3 June 2021 at 14h00.
The aim of the forum is to establish a transdisciplinary, inter-institutional, academic-industry network to support collaboration and inform policy.
Inaugural lecture: “The relevance of economic analysis applied to healthcare and health systems: What is needed and what happens if we don’t have it?”
Presented by: Professor Alex van den Heever, Chair of Social Security Systems Administration and Management Studies, University of the Witwatersrand (WITS). He holds a master’s in economics from the University of Cape Town and has worked professionally in the areas of health economics and finance, public finance, and social security in various capacities in South Africa since 1989.
Summary: Health economics has typically emphasised economic evaluation as the only competency necessary in healthcare. This is however very far off the mark. The field of economics is wide and is broadly divided into macroeconomic analyses and microeconomic analyses. Virtually every aspect of healthcare requires economic consideration. This includes resource allocation frameworks, industrial policy, social policy, competition policy, regulatory frameworks, information frameworks for decision-making, governance frameworks (institutional economics), and all aspects of public finance. This lecture will broadly outline the full spectrum of economic competencies required in health systems and clarify where we will fall short if we do not have them and/or where these competencies have not been institutionalised into key areas of the health system. This lecture will also seek to locate the role of the university in addressing this need.
