The Africa Science Leadership Programme is proud to announce their 2019 cohort of excellent researchers from across Africa. The 20 researchers from 11 African countries commence their training on 22 March 2019. The programme will host its fifth round of training in March 2019 and now comprises of 104 fellows from 19 African countries. 

A unique aspect of the 2019 ASLP training is that the workshop will be hosted by the new Future Africa campus. Participants will attend training sessions at the campus as well as attend the official Future Africa opening on 29 March.  

The Africa Science Leadership Programme (ASLP) is an nitiative of the University of Pretoria and the Global Young Academy, with the support of the Robert Bosch Stiftung. It aims to grow mid-career African academics in the areas of thought leadership, team management and research development, with the intention of enabling them to contribute to the development of a new paradigm for science in African, focused on its contribution to solving the complex issues facing both Africa and the global community.

The leadership programme aims to:

  • Identify early- to mid-career academics who have demonstrated leadership potential and an interest in developing key leadership skills
  • Support them to apply the acquired skills to projects that are relevant to the academic development on the continent and its impact on society
  • Create a network of academic leaders on the continent, spanning not only across countries, but also across disciplinary boundaries
  • Advance a curriculum for academic leadership development which can be utilised in other institutions in Africa and beyond.
