Work and Research

Rhian Twine has worked for 30 years in rural areas in South Africa, specifically 13 years working in the field of community engagement in research. During this time she worked on projects that required her to work in the community, rather than in an institution, allowing a deep understanding of this society, its organisation, its challenges and its progress over the past 25 years. She has worked for the MRC/Wits Rural Public Health and Health Transitions Research Unit (Agincourt) since 2004, focusing on developing strong links with the host community since a relationship of trust, respect and mutual fair benefit is essential to conducting longitudinal research in any one community.
