Lloyd Melusi Maphosa is a third year PhD student at Stellenbosch University. He is both a beneficiary of the Gerda Henkel Foundation and a Lisa Maskell Fellow. His area of study is business history with specific focus on capitalism in the Cape Colony between 1861 and 1902. This is a project he carries in conjunction with to the Frontiers of Finance, a conglomeration of researchers examining the financial and business history of the British Cape Colony. He is also an affiliate of the Laboratory for the Economics of Africa’s Past (LEAP), a group of economic historians that interrogate history using alternative methodologies and data sources.
